Why the codes never move
A supplier's part number is an attribute of a stock code, not the code itself. When they renumber, the new reference is written on and the old one is kept.
So an order raised in 2009 quoting a part number that supplier abandoned in 2026 still opens, still costs what it cost, and still reports where it always did.
